* Rule of thumb, meaning rough calculation, probably derives from the ancient practise of adding a 'thumbs' width to every yard when measuring cloth, to allow for error. Measurement across your thumb joint is considered an exact way of measuring the distance between your acupuncture points. One thumbs width is termed a 'kun'.
